If you've traveled Highway 68 between Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula, you've seen them — towering figures of farmworkers standing twenty feet tall in the fields off the side of the road, larger than life and impossible to miss. Most people assume they mark something commercial and keep driving. They should stop.
Those giant farmers — crafted by local artist John Cerney — are statues of packers, trimmers and irrigators, a tribute to the hardworking men and women of The Farm. They mark the entrance to one of the most genuine agricultural experiences in Monterey County, and one that most locals have never actually visited.
What The Farm Is
The Farm is an agricultural education center and local farming business just outside of Salinas. It offers fresh organic produce for sale, farm tours, special family activities and a pleasant rural destination. The produce stand is open April through December, while tours run year round.
The farm consists of a produce stand and gift store featuring certified organic produce from their own growing operations, supplemented by organic and conventional produce from other growers. A five-acre certified organic field where much of the produce is grown sits adjacent to the store. Strawberries, lettuces, cauliflower, sweet corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins are among their specialties.
There's also a small animal area where kids can interact with farm animals, and a gift shop stocked with locally made products including Lulu's chocolates and — on Fridays — freshly baked pies that visitors consistently rave about.
Getting Your Hands Dirty
For a more hands-on experience you can book a custom tour which includes one-on-one time with a farmer, visiting various parts of the vegetable farming operation while taking part in the daily routine of a real farmer. These tours are available by appointment and tailored to the group's interests — making them a natural fit for school field trips, family visits or anyone who wants to understand where the food on their plate actually comes from.
Educational presentations on farming, tractor rides and music make the experience suitable for any age.
Why It Matters
Monterey County produces an extraordinary percentage of the nation's vegetables. The Salinas Valley is genuinely called the Salad Bowl of the World — and yet most residents have never set foot on a working farm. The Farm on Highway 68 closes that gap in a way that's accessible, family-friendly and genuinely fun.
It's also a reminder that the agriculture that defines this region isn't just a backdrop to drive past. It's a living, working industry with real people behind it — and The Farm makes that visible in a way that a grocery store aisle never could.
Getting There
The Farm is located off the Spreckels Boulevard exit on Highway 68, a couple of miles west of Old Town Salinas and 15 miles east of Monterey. Look for the giant farmer statues — you can't miss them. Hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm. Call ahead for tour reservations: (831) 455-2575.
